Photographs of the VJ (Victory over Japan) parade in downtown Lorain, Ohio celebrating the end of World War II.

September 30, 1945 / Downtown Lorain

Photographs of the VJ (Victory over Japan) parade in downtown Lorain, Ohio celebrating the end of World War II. The photographs are mounted together on a board in the physical collection, so are grouped together here.

The first photograph is of Lorain Mayor Patrick J. Flaherty with three unidentified women in swimsuit attire.

The second photograph is of a float in the shape of a boat cruiser. Several women, perhaps pageant entrants, are posed on top of the float and are waving to the crowd. One woman, at the top right of the float, is wearing a crown.

The third photograph is the Lorain Public Library float. Several women dressed in what was then considered "librarian" attire are seated on the left of the float in individual chairs reading books. One woman in the center of the float appears to be standing at a desk, perhaps ready to check out books. "Lorain Public Library" is printed on the cover of the giant book on the back right of the float. Under the main area of the float are the words "Nazis Burn Books We Build Walls of Books."
